Jane Kim Earns Major Endorsement from California Labor Union in Race for Insurance Commissioner

The California Teachers Association sole endorsed Kim

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The California Teachers Association (CTA), one of California’s largest unions, announced today that they are endorsing Jane Kim for California Insurance Commissioner. CTA represents over 300,000 teachers across the state. They join SEIU California, California Federation of Teachers (CFT), the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and California Working Families Party in supporting Kim’s historic campaign for Insurance Commissioner.

CTA’s endorsement reflects Kim’s strong commitment to addressing the rising costs facing teachers, holding powerful insurance companies accountable, and ensuring stable, affordable coverage for teachers, students, and their families – including her proposal to guarantee healthcare for every child in California.

“I’m proud to earn the endorsement of the California Teachers Association and the educators who are raising and cultivating the next generation of Californians,” said Jane Kim. “Teachers feel the punishing consequences of corporate greed in the classroom—when students lose housing or health care, and when skyrocketing insurance pushes educators further away from the dream of owning a home. I am excited to partner with CTA to make insurance affordable and accessible for all.”

Kim’s campaign for Insurance Commissioner is centered on three core priorities: creating a public option for disaster insurance to bring down skyrocketing premiums, reining in excessive insurance industry profits, and guaranteeing healthcare coverage for all kids.

“Like so many Californians, teachers are dealing with the impacts of rising costs and an economy that feels rigged against working people,” said David Goldberg, President, California Teachers Association. “When insurance premiums go up or coverage disappears, it hits our members and their students directly. Jane Kim has a track record of taking on powerful industries to make the system fairer and more affordable for everyone. That’s why we’re proud to endorse her for Insurance Commissioner.”

Jane Kim has a long record of standing up for and delivering wins for workers. As Supervisor, she worked with the San Francisco Labor Council to author and pass California’s first $15 minimum wage, and wrote a gross-receipts tax on large commercial properties that raised $140 million to boost pay for city-contracted workers. She consistently defended union jobs in every budget cycle, voting against outsourcing even during economic downturns. Kim also worked closely with AFT 2121 to make City College tuition-free for all San Franciscans, and as a School Board member partnered with SEIU Local 1021 to support classified school workers.
