Happy New Year's, SFPO Dispatch and dope music

Portions of this entry was recently sent to my listserve.

1) San Francisco People’s Organization DISPATCH

Imagine MoveOn.org, but for local San Francisco politics and ongoings…. Ever wanted to get a grasp of what issues and legislations are happening in the city that you live in? Know more about what’s going on nationally (Alito filibuster, Bush does something wrong again, THE WAR), but have no idea what is going on locally?

I am proud to announce the LAUNCH of the San Francisco People’s Organization’s DISPATCH.

The purpose of the SFPO Dispatch is to help you UNDERSTAND what’s going on and then TAKE ACTION to make San Francisco a more livable City for everyone.

If you like what you see, please consider subscribing and taking us for a test drive. Big ups to Ian Kim, (from Ella Baker Center for Change) SFPO’s Vice-President of Communications for creating this much needed forum.

Read the SFPO Dispatch and subscribe here.

2) YOUTH GUEST BLOG COLUMNISTS have started writing….

Three young emerging leaders have agreed to be Guest Columnists and liven up my website. They will be writing about issues facing young people in San Francisco today and what young people are working on. These young ladies, Diana Pang, Rosa Wong-Chie and Amanda Rose, are going to be running things soon— it’d be good to get to know them now.

Hailing from Galileo, Marshall and Balboa (current and past), these emerging leaders are Student Advisory Council members to SFUSD, Youth Commissioners, housing/neighborhood and more.

Here’s one entry

3) SINAG SINING is here: Dope, local bands and artists unite to support Bindlestiff

If you know me, you know that my second love is music. And I’m a bit of a music snob. This CD is GOOD. Need something new to listen to? Check out INCREDIBLE bands such as From Monuments to Masses, Kiwi, Denizen Kane, The Skyflakes, Pidgeon and more—all incubated here in SF.

CD’s are $15. They are on sale at Bindlestiff, www.cdbaby.com, and in my bag. Ask me for one!

4) SWETTING FOR CHANGE: Why are we closing a school with 81% enrollment?

As you probably know, the SF School Board just closed several of our schools. The decision that many folks question the most is the closing of John Swett Elementary School (and merging it with John Muir Elementary).

Swett should never have been on the closure list. Swett’s enrollment numbers (81%) are much higher than the threshold for closure. Did I mention that Swett serves our lowest-income children and is 98% students of color? I’ve visited Swett, and it’s a lively school community with great teachers that care about the school. The District has yet to provide a satisfactory reason for why Swett was on the closure list.

The only reason a lot of us can imagine is that the District wants the building for office space and convenient parking. (It is right across the block from the District office. And yes, they are planning on moving in.) Perhaps they thought that poor, hard working parents wouldn’t fight for their kids. Well, they’re wrong.
