average weekend
Precinct drops, school visits, community fairs, house parties, tabling and forums has been my life the past month. People have asked me what my campaign schedule is like so I thought I would give a glimpse into my past weekend:
Saturday
9:30am Volunteer at 21st Century School in Bayview – I got a chance to visit and volunter at one of the reconstituted “Dream Schools” serving 4-6th graders in Bayview with Comcast Cares, where my roommate works. We were weeding and resoiling the community gardens so that the students could start their own gardens. During a break, I got a chance to chat with the special education teacher and visit her classroom. Again, I really enjoy talking to school staff and teachers. They are really amazing folks.
1:00pm I grabbed some lunch and then ran off to the League of Women Voters Forum for Board of Education candidates at the LGBT Center. Forums are tiring, you feel exhausted afterwards. They can be long with 12 candidates, but also a mental exercise to answer all the different questions that can be asked about public education. I did, however, enjoy this one. Partially, because two former students, Jack and Caleb, surprised me by coming by.
3:00pm Teachers 4 Social Justice Forum in Mission HS. The morning session was on how to introduce academic rigor and social justice into the classroom! Wow.
5pm Break at home, veg out with Jack, Caleb and MJ in front of the TV
6:30pm Dinner
8:00pm Campaign benefit at Velvet Lounge
11:30pm Home
Sunday
Noon See volunteers precinct walking in D5
1pm Portola Family Fair – to meet parents and families in the Silver neighborhood.
3pm Media Interview
4pm Precinct Walk – I had time at the end of my afternoon to drop in one precinct with Dave and Jeremiah. They are both hardcore – down to drop whenever. I have to say, it is fun to just precinct walk. It gets tiring talking all day, so it is nice to walk and drop literature. This is the part of the campaign that I really enjoy. I like field work. It’s fun and it’s real. It’s the part of the campaign where you can actually reach voters. I am the only school board candidate that is both dropping her own literature and putting up posters on city poles. But I got to do it. One, I am running a volunteer-based campaign, in which, we do for free what other candidates are paying for. I am another body. 2) You have to do all the work your volunteers are doing. It’s only right and you get a better understanding of what everyone is giving to you.
6pm Campaign Meeting
8:30pm Home
I’m either getting used to the campaign schedule or I had a light weekend. For some reason, it didn’t feel as hectic as other weekends. But I realize that I might just be adjusting. October is here now, and I am going to be running a lot harder.
