New Leadership

“Divided by default or Unified by Design.” Tony Smith, new Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Innovation and Social Justice

Dear Friends and Family,

There are some exciting things going on at San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and I am proud to be a part of it. I walked into the office of our new Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Innovation and Social Justice, (the first position of its kind thanks to our new Superintendent, Carlos Garcia), this past Thursday and saw this quote on his white board. We have a passionate team of thought, education and policy leaders who are tackling what it means to be “unified by design” and I am excited about what we were are going to do to change how we educate, serve and yes, empower, young people, for the better, here in San Francisco!

Thanks to everyone who voted this past Tuesday. We won Proposition A, a $26 million initiative to reform and improve MUNI and we defeated the poorly written Proposition H, which would have increased parking and congestion downtown. To see the election results, click HERE.

Yes, we have acquired differing levels of debt from our last campaigns. But it was worth it. Three women of color won. And now we have a board that, yes, GETS ALONG. We still disagree at times, AND we can work together. I believe in this board and their passion for education and I am grateful to be a part of a true team.

If you have already given, thank you! If you missed your opportunity to give, donations would be greatly appreciated! This is also a chance to meet the new board and hear about our work this year.

2) New SFUSD Leadership Team: Carlos Garcia, Tony Smith, Francesca Sanchez, Myong Leigh and Miguel Marquez

The Board of Education announced our final selection for the new Superintendent of SFUSD in June 2007—Carlos Garcia. Since then, Carlos has been working hard to put together a team of talented leaders and educators.

Tony Smith, Deputy Superintendent for Instruction, Innovation, and Social Justice. Carlos has attracted Tony to take the helm of the SFUSD’s academic programs and schools beginning November. Tony is the former State Superintendent of Emery Unified School District and a former program director for the Bay Area Coalition of Essential Schools. During his 5 year tenure, he has led the transformation of the 800 student school district out of a State takeover and into a hub of excellence in the East Bay and is highly regarded in the education community as a rising star in the field of educational leadership.

Francisca Sánchez, Associate Superintendent of Academics and Professional Development. Francisca has served in a variety of leadership, administrative, and teaching positions at the district, county office, regional, and state levels. She is currently the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction with the Office of the San Bernadino County Superintendent of Schools. “I am very excited about joining a team that I think is progressive and forward-thinking with a powerful vision for student achievement,” says Francisca Sánchez.

Myong Leigh, Deputy Superintendent of Policy and Operations
Miguel Marquez, General Counsel

To round out the team, we have elevated the leadership of 2 very intelligent and committed staff members, Myong Leigh and Miguel Marquez. Myong, a budget guru, has been in charge of operations and policy at SFUSD for the past six years. Miguel had been serving as Assistant General Counsel at SFUSD and is a former SF Deputy City Attorney. Both have worked previously for other school districts as well.
