Support Eddy Zheng

Eddy Zheng is facing deportation for criminal convictions from 20 years ago. He served 19+ years of a 7-to-life sentence for a robbery he committed at 16. He was finally paroled this year and is currently being held in Yuba County Jail in California awaiting deportation hearings. Over 210 political leaders, community organizers and individuals have written a letter on his behalf. He is an avid writer, fought for Ethnic Studies while at San Quentin and has written a curriculum targetted towards “at-risk” youth to prevent them from making the same mistakes that he did.

Eddy is a friend, supporter and activist. Despite being behind bars, Eddy has not wasted his time, but has made an incredible impact on many people through his writings, blog and passion. Charming, intelligent and calm, I have enjoyed getting to know Eddy through our few visits and letter writing. I am proud to have had him as a supporter during the campaign. I still remember when my campaign treasurer told me that we had gotten a check from State Prison. I was completely blown away. Eddy wanted to support another young person trying to earn a voice in our political system. There ain’t no minimum wage in prison, so any check meant millions more. Eddy has taught me a fair bit about patience, fighting for what you believe and strength.

Eddy’s deportation hearing is
Monday, May 9th at 1pm
INS building, 630 Sansome @ Washington

This will be the first of several hearings on his deportation.

Thanks to Eddy, I have also learned about a lot of the b*llsh*t that families of inmates have to endure. Including a scam that telecommunications company have in prison. The only way to talk to a loved one or friend in prison is if they call you collect. We know the majority of inmates come from low-income communities. Research has also shown that inmates are more likely to rehabilitate if they have frequent contact with family and loved ones. With a defecit in our state budget, California has cut down on visiting hours to weekends only. And it can be hours of wait to visit an inmate.
