Congratulations Graduates and the end of the school year
Congratulations to all the SFUSD graduates this year!! Special shout outs to graduates—Tammy Yan, Susanna Leong, Jason Tan, Donna Huang and Queena Chen. 07! Thank you for your (at least!) four years of community advocacy, leadership, and service. I can’t wait to see what you are going to do next.
As my first school year on the Board of Education ends, I have begun reflecting on my first 6 months and have started to put together my thoughts, plans and priorities for my four years on the Board. I hope to blog about that before July.
As a Board member, I tried to visit at least one school a week on average. I prioritized middle schools, as Improving Resources for Middle Schools was one of my platform priorities when I ran. I also visited schools that invited me. Due to my past work as a Youth Program Director, I had spent time in almost every high school, so even though they are not on the list below, I have probably been there!
Here are a list of schools that I visited in the 2007-2008 school year:
Elementary and K-8 Schools
Bessie Carmichael K-8 School (Former School Board member, Sarah Lipson, now serves as the IRF at this school!)
Claire Lillianthal K-8 School
Creative Arts K-8 School*
Guadalupe Elementary School
Lakeshore Elementary School
Sherman Elementary School
Paul Revere K-8 School
Middle Schools
Visitacion Valley Middle School*
Horace Mann Middle School
James Denman Middle School
Marina Middle School
High Schools
Burton High School
City, Arts and Technology High School (Charter)
Civic Center Secondary School (County)
Leadership High School (Charter)
Galileo High School*
Hilltop High School (County, for now)
June Jordan School for Equity
Principal Center (Court School)
Programs
JROTC at Balboa High School
JROTC at Lowell High School
SF Peer Courts at Excelsior Middle School
There are definite differences amongst the schools I visited, ranging from the school culture to just the resources that they might have. I have met many excellent principals and incredibly hardworking teachers. I have also met some folks that are probably not well suited to work with young people and students. This is not a surprise for many of you since not only do most of know educators, we have all been in school at one point, and remember!
* I visited these schools in the Fall, prior to being elected to the Board.
