Is it a full time job?

One of the first questions people now ask me is how many hours the Board of Education takes during the week.

I thought I would show a real example week in January. Granted, this week there was a particularly long Board of Education meeting, but keep in mind, our committee meetings had not begun yet.

Sunday
12-3pm: Reading Closed Session and Board Meeting Agenda
Total: 3 hours

Monday
A couple of phone calls and lots of emails to respond to. This is everyday. We’ll give this… oh an hour a day.
Total: 1 hour

Tuesday
1:30-3:30pm: Student Master Thesis Presentation at June Jordan High School of Equity
4:30pm: Meeting with District Staff
5:30pm: Closed Session
6:00pm: Board of Education Meeting
12:30am: Closed Session resumes

I believe I left at 1:30-1:45am.
Total: 10 hours

Wednesday
Phone calls and emails: 1 hour

Thursday
9:30-10:30am: Elementary School Visit (Claire Lillianthal Elementary School)
11:00am-12:30pm: High School Visit (Civic Center Secondary School)
2:30-3:30pm: Meeting with an Elected official staff person
5:00-6:30pm: Meeting with a Parent/Community Group
Total: 5 1/2 hours

Friday
Phone calls, email: 1 hour

Saturday
Reading/research on proposals, projects, articles
Total: 2 hours

GRAND TOTAL: 23.5 hours
Weekly Stipend: $125 (minus tax)

Honestly, my calculation of only spending 1 hour on emails, phone calls and reading is a low ball figure. Board of Education is easily a full-time job especially considering the amount of time we should be spending time (1) lobbying and advocating for more resources, (2) researching/reading, (3) visiting schools, meeting with parents, students and community groups and (4) keeping on top of curriculum, budget, facilities, labor, personnel and city issues.
