Jane's First Entry

The other day, one of my students said that she wished that I had run when she was in middle school so the high school that she attended wouldn’t have been “so ghetto.” She just graduated from high school this past June. I realize that in many ways, at least on a policy level, it is too late to make a lot changes in my current students’ education. For that, I will have to continue doing the work that I do, directing youth programs and building youth leadership and empowerment.

I love my job. I really do. Ask any of my friends and roommates. I am truly blessed and fortunate. Every time I tell people ask me about my work, I can say that I love my job and mean it. I love my youth. They are my family and they take care of me (and drive me crazy, but only in the way that younger siblings do). In the summer time, I almost live, breathe and yes, dream them. So you can imagine, it’s strange to suddenly spend so much time campaigning—something I don’t love every minute of. Previously, I only took on projects that I not only believed in but also enjoyed such as starting Locus Arts, and being in active in other community and arts projects.

Running for office has not been one of those enjoyable projects. It has been a journey. Both grueling and empowering. I wish I could have started this earlier to document the ups and downs.

Since I’m starting late, you’re entering this world now. Other campaign volunteers will be blogging here as well, you’ll get their perspective as well. I’m interested in how the internet and blogging are going to affect politics and if it will make politics more accessible to more people. I was advised by blogging veterans to keep my entries as short as possible (this is my first blog entry ever), so I’ll stop now. Thanks for reading!
