How would you spend the general portion of the new Prop H funding in 2005?

AT, Lincoln HS, 2003
I don’t how to order but I think the first and most important one should be summer programs because that’s the longest period of time with no school so students would need something to do and it is a way to keep them out of trouble especially if the programs are interesting.

hey jane…. i’ll make this nice n quick…

we need more summer skoo for these kids because since most kids dun got to skoo during the summer… they sit home n rot.. with summer skoo, they are at least in skoo mode n have a chance to catch up ‘n grad.

hey jane,
i was just thinking about what teachers usually ask for: paper (so that they can make copies for us) and textbooks. i would like to see improvements in the classroom: working window shades, heaters, new paint (rather than the lead-based paint some older schools have), new desks (ones that are large enough to actually write on), funding for our college center. these are just some suggestions. they may sound a little superficial but those are just some visible problems in my school.

hi jane,
yes yes and yes to all that you mentioned, in particular to the ones regarding social workers and counselors – college/career AND MENTAL HEALTH professionals are much needed in the school setting. people can fall through the cracks easily, and we needed proactive prevention and intervention tactics.

#5 sounds particularly interesting to me. in fact, i really loved how your previous school board platform included collaborating with CBOs, public sectors, and various businesses for students to explore career and personal growth interests through internships.

in addition:
-ethnic studies classes
-a local heroes class unit
-challenge! (tmahs was famous for its 2 week program for students to explore career paths)
-learning the social/political/historical significance of school history – from lowell admission rates to the development of the june jordan school – this can be a racial justice component.
-more field trips.
-better lunches
-clean bathrooms equipped with soap and paper towels. and don’t forget actual doors to stalls.
-higher pay for teachers

When I read your email on school funding, I thought about all the programs that I’ve been a part of while in middle and high school, such as AIM high, internships, tutoring workshops, etc… they all contributed a large part of where I am today. If it weren’t for the internship opportunities available to me before I was eligible for work on my own, then I wouldn’t have developed the necessary confidence and job skills necessary for the workforce. The afterschool programs steered me away from trouble and instead, gave me experiences that remained with me today, teaching me the fundamental values of teamwork, honesty, trust, and friendship. Networks were created and I had the opportunity to experience job shadowing, etc… In my opinion, a part of this school funding should be directed towards afterschool and extracurricular programs, such as workshops, tutoring/mentoring programs, job shadowing, internships, etc…

I think we need more funding in peer resources, getting more counselors, and we definitely need funding for the arts.

Its good to hear our district has money. As a senior this year, I really think we need more money for college counselors. They don’t only need to be there, but they need to be accessible. Also, regular counselors need major funding; they just can’t handle so many students. How can counselors write good recommendations when they only know their kids by numbers? Another alternative is to fund the cafeteria. School meals have gotten so skimpy and expensive these days, espcially for those who don’t quite qualify for free/reduced lunches. I hope this was helpful; I’m glad to contribute. Thanks for
asking us.

Here’s my two cents:

1) Counselors – 1 counselor/350 students in SFUSD, both college counselors and mental health counselors (potentially starting in high school first). i really think we need more counselors… im not sure bout other schools but at lowell, there’s not always enough counselors to go around. and during college apps and the first two weeks of each semester, things get really hectic and they have no time to talk with us.

2) Expanding Summer Programs for 600 or 2,000 new students

couselors would be nice, but then i think there should be something done about the cafeteria food as well because the food in the cafeteria stinks! they’re bad. .

I think what is in dire need are more counselors, teachers and funding for extracurricular programs (such as money for Academic Decathlon etc., since the Alumni Association does not provide that much money.) Also I hate it when they cut classes cause of low budgets.
