Go Jane!

Posted by Jack

I have known Jane Kim ever since I was a sophomore in high school back in 2000. My, how the years have passed. During my high school years, I was actively involved-and still am-with the program Jane runs, Adopt-An-Alleyway Youth Program. Jane, little does she know, has contributed a lot to my growing-up experience. She was the first person who introduced me to the history and struggles of the Asian Pacific Islander community; she was the first person who opened up the door to my cultural awakening. I remember, during the first of many API history workshops she threw, I cried because of the anger and frustration upon realizing what the API community has been through, what my community has been through. She helped me develop a thirst for history beyond the realms of what my high school history classes taught. Most significantly, she has taught me the importance of knowing one’s own cultural history. Jane Kim knows what is important because she has worked with students like me who have benefited from her guidance. I know that Jane Kim will be able to open new doors for the students of SFUSD just as how she has helped me open mine.
